European Cathedrals’ Conference in Pisa
Ed Morton recently had the pleasure and privilege of presenting at the European Cathedrals' Conference in Pisa Italy. The conference was called to celebrate 20 years since the stabilisation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and looked at structural monitoring techniques being used across Europe, as well as other technological options for surveying and recording deterioration, including to glass and masonry.
Ed presented on ‘Structural Monitoring of English Cathedrals, Past, Present and Future’. This started with the collapse of the crossing tower at Ely Cathedral in 1322, moving rapidly forward to more recent works that The Morton Partnership have carried out at both York Minster and Canterbury Cathedral, where Ed is the appointed Engineer. He then went on to talk about the work under a research grant for the European Space Agency, working with Moniteye, remote monitoring specialists, on assessing the use of satellite technology to monitor historic buildings.
